Nonfiction & Reference Resources for Children
Awards
The following is a list of literary awards given to outstanding
works for children or young adults. Some are specifically for
nonfiction and/or reference materials. Others include these types of
materials as possible recipients. Relevant links are provided when
available.
- Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Children's Video -
This award has been given annually since 1991,to the producers of the
outstanding video productions for children released during the previous
year. It is given by the ALA Association for Library Service to

- Boston Globe-Horn Book Award - Awards have been given
annually since 1967 by the Boston Globe and Horn Book.
Since 1976, these have included an award and honors for outstanding
nonfiction for children. Boston

- Caldecott Medal and Honor Books - First established in
1937 at the suggestion of American publisher Frederick G. Melcher, by
the American Library Association (ALA). It is now administered by the
ALA Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC). This award is
given annually to "the artist of the most distinguished American
picture book for children published in the United States during the

- Coretta Scott King Award - This award has been given by
the Social Responsibilities Round Table of the American Library
Association since 1969 to an African American author of an outstanding
children's book published during the previous year. The added
illustrator award was added in 1979.

- Giverny Book Award - This award has been given since 1998
for the Best Children's Science Picture Book. It was established by
Drs. Wandersee and Schussler for the 15 Degree Laboratory which is

- Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal - This award has been given
every three years since 1980 by the ALA Association for Library Service
to Children (ALSC). It is presented to an American author who has
contributed significantly to the field of children's literature over a
period of several years. It was established in 1960 and given every
five years until 1980. Laura

- Mildred L. Batchelder Award and Honors - This award has
been given annually since 1966 by the ALA Association for Library
Service to Children (ALSC). Honor books have been included since 1994.
The award is given to an American publisher for the publishing of an
outstanding children's book that was originally published in a foreign

- Newbery Medal and Honor Books - First established in 1921

- Orbis Pictus Award and Honors - The National Council of
Teachers of English has given this award annually since 1990, to an
outstanding nonfiction work for children. Honor awards are made, also. Orbis

- Pura Belpré Illustrator Award and Honor Books -
This award is co-sponsored by the ALA Association for Library Service
to Children (ALSC) and the National Association to Promote Library
Services to the Spanish Speaking. It is given biennally (since 1996) to
a Latino/Latina illustrator for an outstanding work in children's
literature that portrays the Latino cultural experience. Honor awards
are given, also.

- Pura Belpré Author Award and Honor Books - This
award is co-sponsored by the ALA Association for Library Service to
Children (ALSC) and the National Association to Promote Library
