Danny Flowers with Brian & Mary Lewis Concert June 24th, 2006 at Smithfield Little Theatre   Danny Flowers came to Smithfield and wowed the audience with his songs and guitar prowess. Using his world wide hit song, “Tulsa Time”, in it’s original slower version as a starting point, for an hour and a half he performed song after song that gave the audience an array of emotions from laugh out loud to getting a lump in your throat holding back tears, all of which made for an enjoyable night of music in a perfect venue. Sound man, Jeff Covington, made sure that the sound heard on stage was the same sound heard in the back row of the building and all seats between.   Flowers played many of his originals and as a bonus to those who chose Smithfield over the Hampton Jazz Festival where B. B. King was playing, offered his rendition of one of the blues legend’s songs. Curtis Mayfield and Billy Preston songs closed the show and delighted the crowd.   Danny Flowers proved himself to be very personable and a real delight. After all, how many people can wear a plaid shirt and a different plaid pants and make it work?   The show was opened by Brian and Mary Lewis of Williamsburg doing a great history lesson of country music from the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. Classroom history was never this much fun. And who knew that Gene Autry started out as a blues artist, most thought he was born a cowboy. Andy Petkofsky joined them with his upright bass and added a dimension of talent and sound that complimented the act very well.   Thanks to all who participated!
