                                                        John Byrom

John Byrom—elder brother of Henry and Peter, came to Virginia about 1693. There is no record of his marriage or of any children. He remained in Essex County, Virginia, until his death in 1716.

Henry and Peter Byrom were the first Gunsmiths of record in the American Colonies. In his first book, Mark says that the grandfather of Peter and Henry was the younger brother of a Knight. Henry and Peter were Gunsmiths in Lancashire, England before they came to America. Their father was probably an armorer to a close relative. In his Indenture Henry is listed as a Gunsmith and was indentured to serve as a gunsmith for a term of four years, for which he received fifty acres of land.
Peter Byrom died in 1719 in Essex County, Virginia, leaving his widow, Mary, and five daughters: Eleanor, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah, and Frances. Frances married a Meador and had a son named Byrom. Thomas Meador's Essex County will of July 31, 1758 says: "I give to my son Ruben Meador my old hunting gun made by Peter Byrom".

                           HENRY BYROM(Married Frances Mills)

Henry settled in Essex County, Virginia on the fifty acres of land he received under Indenture contract. When Robert Mills (his father-in-law) died in 1709, he left: "To Henry Byrom the marsh in front of the land I formerly gave him". The earlier gift in 1702 was about 100 acres. Henry also bought 140 acres of land from Francis Goldman, June 11, 1706, and received 40 acres from his brother-in-law, John Mills, December 3, 1711. So Henry owned 330 acres, plus those in the "marsh". ,
The Rappahannock River divides Essex and Richmond Counties and Essex County is on the south bank. Henry Byrom's land was on Mount's • Landing Creek in Essex County, about two miles from the Rappahannock River. The creek flows into the Rappahannock two miles above the town of Tappahannock. It can be reached by car on U.S. Highway #17 from Fredericksburg to Tappahannock and is situated on the west side of Mount's Landing Creek about one-quarter mile above the highway bridge over this creek. The bridge over Mount's Landing Creek is about four miles north of Tappahannock. Mount's Landing is near State Road  627 between Beasley and Tappahannock.
(See John Speed's Map of the Virginia Colony in 1635, marked to show where the Byrom brothers settled on the Rappahannock River in Essex County, Virginia)

Bryant followed his oldest brother, John, to North Carolina where he deeded Chowan Co. land to Sm. Cockrill in 1742. He was a private in the N. C. Militia in Capt. James Farlee's Company in 1756. Bryant and Christian became Quakers in 1756 (see Quaker Records). See Bryant's will of 1772.
The Piney Woods MM (Quaker) in Perquimans County, North Carolina, have the following entries in their records:
1 Sept. 1756: , Bryant and Christian Byram requested to come underr. care of meeting and were left for trial.
1 Nov. 1758:   Bryant and Christian Byram received in Membership.
Following the above entries, their descendants appear in the Quaker records for many generations. The Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, Pennsylvania has records of the Byrum family in North Carolina, Ohio, and Indiana—starting with Bryant and Christian in 1756 and ending with the marriage of my father's sister, Martha Birum, who married Jacob Miller on December 19, 1878. (William Wade Hinshaw's ENCYCLOPEDIA OF AMERICAN- QUAKER GENEALOGY)
The Old Quaker Meeting House that Bryant and Christian attended was still in use in 1892 when Drusilla Byrum visited it. See description of it further on taken from "DRUSILLA'S DIARY".
After Henry Byrom died, Bryant and Peter were raised by Henry's cousin, James Byrom in Essex County, Virginia. (See Bond for Guardian-ship) Their sisters, Mary and Frances were raised by Jonathan Haile and wife. After Bryant was grown, he followed his elder brother John to North Carolina, where he deeded Chowan County land to Samuel Cockroll in 1743.
Note: When Bryant Byrom made out his Will in 1772, he had changed his name to "BRIAND BIRUM". The spelling "BIRUM" was used for several generations of Bryant's descendants, but gradually the name changed to "BYRUM". Mark Byron's grandfather, Mark Bennett Byrum, Sr., changed his name from "BYRUM" to BYRON. His de-scendants have continued the spelling of "BYRON".

Christian is mentioned in the Quaker records of Piney Woods MM, Per-quimans County, North Carolina under date of April 5, 1786. Later, she is mentioned in the will of her son, James, dated 1793, and in will of grandson Gideon in 1796.
