This indenture made this the 28th of September AD 1835
Between James J Rhodes of the County of Jones and the State of North Carolina
of the one part and Amos Askew of the same State and County of Onslow of
the other part Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of Seventy-nine
dollars and ten cents to him the said James J Rhodes in hand paid or secured
to be paid by the said Amos Askew at or before the sealing and delivering
of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged and by these
presents I the said James J Rhodes hath granted bargained and sold
conveyed and confirmed unto him the said Amos Askew and his heirs a certain
piece or parcel of land situate lying and being in the County of Onslow
and State aforesaid on the South of New River Swamp joining the lands of
heirs of James Mills deceased on the West and South side and William
Mills lands on the East butted and bounded as follows (viz) Beginning at
Barnets corner of the South side of New River Swamp and runs South 13 West
200 poles to a pine then North 73 East 250 poles to a White Oak then North
22 West 166 poles to a pine then North 47 East 18 poles then North 50 West
60 poles to the run of New River then up the various courses of the same
New River Swamp to the beginning containing by estimation to be 226 acres
be the same more or less to have and to hold the above described lands
hereby bargained and sold and every part and parcel thereof with their
appurtenances unto him the said Amos Askew his heirs and assigns for ever
to his own proper use and behoof from me my heirs and assigns and the said
James J Rhodes do for me my heirs and assigns and from all other persons
or person or from any claim or claims whatsoever warrant and forever defend
the aforesaid lands free and clear from me my heirs and assigns forever
and from any other person or persons whatsoever and witness whereof
I have here unto set my hand and fix my seal day and date first above written
